Honest disqualifications
When Not to Work With Us
The work Own Your Story does is narrow on purpose. Here are the specific situations where we are the wrong call — and where the right specialist is someone else.
The pages that are honest about what they will not take are usually the ones worth trusting on what they will.
Most websites in adjacent categories sell themselves as the answer to any question that touches their vocabulary. We do not. The work we do — building public authority and the body of work that compounds with it, anchored in the O.W.N® practice and the longevity-career view — is a specific discipline with specific tools. It does not solve most problems professionals bring to it.
The list below is genuine. These are the situations where, after a first conversation, we send people elsewhere. The work belongs to leadership coaches, business coaches, branding agencies, ghostwriters, reputation managers, content marketers, speaker coaches and tactical platform consultants. All of those are real disciplines with serious practitioners. Hire the right one for the question you are actually asking.
If you are still uncertain after reading this list, the Authority Mindset Audit is a thirty-minute diagnostic that will usually tell you whether the work in front of you is genuinely ours or someone else's.
The disqualifications
Eleven situations where we are the wrong call
- You need internal leadership development
- If the work is inside the organisation — managing the team, navigating board dynamics, executive presence with peers and reports, internal politics, organisational design — Own Your Story is the wrong call. We work one layer outward, on public authority and body of work. Internal leadership has its own depth and its own practitioners. Hire a serious leadership coach.See: Leadership coach vs Own Your Story →
- You need to scale, raise, or exit a business
- If the question is how to grow this company toward a hundred million, how to run the next round, how to position for an exit, how to manage the operating cadence and the board — that is the work of a serious business coach or an experienced operator. We do not work on scale-to-exit. Our business work is one layer up: which businesses to build at an inflection point, across a longevity career. Different question.See: Business coach vs Own Your Story →
- You need eighteen-month visibility on a deadline
- If you have a launch in nine months, a hiring round in twelve, a fundraise in fifteen, and the work is to be the most legible option inside a category by then — a personal branding agency will deliver more efficiently than we will. Our work is built for decades, not deadlines. The discipline of short-horizon visibility is real; it is not ours.See: Personal branding agency vs Own Your Story →
- You have a crisis or active press situation
- If a press cycle is breaking, an exposure needs handling, a framing has taken hold that has to be moved, a Wikipedia or search-result problem requires intervention — that is the work of a specialist reputation manager. We do not do crisis communications or active reputation defence. Hire a senior reputation manager and call us afterwards if you want to address the substance underneath.See: Reputation management vs Own Your Story →
- You need someone to write your book
- If the project is bounded and retrospective — a memoir documenting an already-closed arc, a single book recording work that has already happened, a long-form summary that has to land for a launch — and the writing is the bottleneck, hire a serious executive ghostwriter. Our work is upstream of the book. It is the structural foundation that lets you author the next one yourself. For a bounded retrospective project, ghostwriting is often the right call.See: Executive ghostwriter vs Own Your Story →
- You need to run a corporate communications programme
- If the work is integrated comms inside an organisation — topic research and selection, content development for the brand, communications strategy across the year, reputation management as a corporate function, PR and media placement — hire a serious thought leadership agency or PR firm. The work they do is real and well-developed; it is not the work we do.See: Thought leadership agency vs Own Your Story →
- You want hooks, posting cadence and platform tactics
- If the question is how the LinkedIn algorithm currently rewards engagement, what hooks survive the scroll, what cadence pattern compounds followers, how to time posts for the feed — that is a tactical course or a platform-growth consultant. The skill is real, and a good course will close that gap quickly. We work upstream of platform tactics.See: LinkedIn growth course vs Own Your Story →
- You need a content engine to feed a funnel
- If content is genuinely the acquisition channel for the business — SaaS organic traffic, B2B inbound, marketplace content libraries — hire a competent content marketing agency. The work is well-developed and the returns are measurable. Our work and a content engine are different assets; we do not run engines.See: Content marketing agency vs Own Your Story →
- You want general life or business coaching
- If you want broad, ongoing support across the operating system of your professional life — a relationship over years, thinking with you about whatever comes up — a good general or executive coach is the right call. Our work is much narrower: the structural authorship practice and the longevity-career architecture that sits underneath public authority. Those are specific problems with specific tools.See: Business coach vs Own Your Story →
- You are not at an inflection point and do not anticipate one
- Most of our work is organised around inflection points — the shift from operator to advisor, founder to investor, executive to public authority, single role to portfolio. If your work is steady-state and you do not anticipate a structural change in the next several years, the urgency for the kind of foundation we build is lower. The work still applies; the timing is less acute.
- You want someone to develop the thinking for you
- If the underlying position, the contrarian angle, the problem-setting and the lived material are not yet yours — and the expectation is that we will produce them — that is not what we do. We work with the substance that already exists, however latent. Surfacing, articulating, defending and compounding what is there is the work. Manufacturing it from scratch is something else entirely, and not honest authorship in any case.See: AI ghostwriter vs Own Your Story →
When we are the right call
When the work in front of you is structural and about the next thirty years rather than the next quarter. When you are at an inflection point and the question is what gets built next, not how to run the current arc. When the body of work that should represent you across the rest of your career has not yet been authored, and the substance underneath your public position is what needs the attention.
When you want authority that travels — across roles, organisations, products, decades — rather than an asset organised around the current company. When the vocabulary you use to think about this work is "authority fingerprint" and "body of work," not "personal brand" and "content strategy." When the centre of gravity should be the person, not the campaign.
That is the work the O.W.N® practice does. Six proprietary frameworks — Congruence Wheel™, Toneprint™, Authority Archetype Mix™, Triangle of Fear Mastery™, Integrity Compass™, Rule of Two™ — and the longevity-career architecture that sits underneath them.
If you are still unsure
The Authority Mindset Audit is a thirty-minute diagnostic across six dimensions of professional authority. The results arrive in five. It will usually tell you whether the work in front of you is genuinely ours or someone else's. If the answer is someone else's, the audit also points to which discipline.
