Body of work
The accumulated, defended, structurally coherent output of a professional across decades — positions taken, arguments published, decisions explained in their own terms.
Definition
A body of work is what a professional has authored, defended and accumulated across their working life — the public record of what they actually stood for, built piece by piece across years and decades.
The phrase is borrowed deliberately from the vocabulary of serious writers, scientists, artists, architects and public intellectuals — disciplines where the unit of evaluation has never been the individual piece but the cumulative output. We use it at Own Your Story for professional authority for the same reason: the right unit is not a single talk, a single article or a single quarter of content; it is what those pieces add up to when you look back from ten or thirty years out.
The body of work is what carries authority across role changes, company changes and platform changes. It is the asset that the longevity-career view is built around.
Body of work vs content archive vs portfolio
The three terms are often used interchangeably. They name structurally different things.
A content archive is a record of what was published. It accumulates by volume. Most of it is calibrated for the moment it was produced — the campaign it served, the platform it was made for, the funnel it was feeding — and does not survive into the long-term record.
A portfolio is a curated selection of finished projects, presented to demonstrate capability. It is showcase work — designed for a specific audience and a specific reading frame.
A body of work is the broader accumulation that decides what the professional actually stood for. It includes some of what is in the content archive (the pieces that held) and some of what is in the portfolio (the projects that mattered) — and also things neither captures: the positions taken in public, the arguments defended when they cost something, the decisions explained in the professional's own terms over years. It is the unit a serious career rests on.
What makes a body of work compound
The structural conditions are specific. The same underlying substance has to produce every piece — the same angle of attack, the same convictions, the same characteristic moves. That consistency is what makes the work recognisable across years and what makes each new piece reinforce the previous ones instead of running parallel to them.
The professional has to actually author the work themselves. Ghostwritten or AI-generated pieces fill a content archive but do not contribute to a body of work, because the underlying signature is not theirs. This is why authorship is the load-bearing question and why outsourcing it produces volume without compounding.
And the position the body of work rests on has to have been articulated — diagnosed, defended, made legible. Without that articulated foundation, even authored work tends to drift across decades and the audience cannot quite tell what is being built. The Authority Architect's role is to produce that foundation so the body of work compounds rather than dispersing.
Why the body of work is the OYS unit
Most adjacent disciplines optimise for different units. Personal branding optimises for visibility inside a category. Content marketing optimises for traffic and conversion. PR optimises for coverage. Thought leadership agencies optimise for placements and platforms inside the current company. All of those are real assets, and the disciplines that produce them do real work.
The body of work is what a professional has when all of those assets have ended. It is the part that travels through role changes, company exits, platform shifts and category transitions. It is what makes a longevity career actually possible — because what connects the operator phase to the advisor phase to the institution-builder phase is the body of work running through all of them.
